Wednesday we saw Urology - renal ultrasound showed that Cameron's one kidney is large, this is to be expected as it's doing the job of two. There is a little bit of fluid still in the kidney but they are not concerned. We'll see them again in one year! The Dr did mention the leg length discrepancy she sees and was happy to hear we are getting an MRI based on some other bits of our conversation. Oh and she also thinks Cameron needs to eat some prunes to be sure his system is "cleared" out - I'm going to spare you all the details of this conversation. :)
Cameron, Mom and Dad all got bloodwork done for the Dandy Walker study - don't worry I didn't have them prick Cameron for the study alone, he was already having blood draw for a creatin (spelling?) work up with the kidney.
Today was the MRI, as we were waiting for the escort to take us down for sedation another family sat down next to us and of course Cameron charmed them with his winning grin. When they asked how old he was we both realized that Cameron and their little girl were NICU mates!! I knew they looked familiar but couldn't place them, our little babies shared a room and as we discovered back then the mom and I had the same due date - July 12th! So we had a trip down memory lane, it was great to see them and their little girl who is now 25lbs!
And just as we were getting caught up our number was called, we went down to the sub basement of the hospital and here I thought I had seen every possible nook and cranny of this place. Cameron charmed the nurses and we got him off to sleep, they used the oral solution for sedation because the MRI did not need any contrast, therefore no IV. He drifted off about 10:30am and they wheeled him away with his doggy in tow. They said it would take about an hour and 20 minutes.
I met up with Dad in the lobby and we had another trip down memory lane as we ran into Dr. Nana Matoba, who was the neonatologist that helped to deliver Cameron and took care of him at Prentice, and then at Children's for a bit. She was the one who always called Cameron "the little mystery." Her voice is something I'll never forget, she is so sweet. We were pushing around an empty stroller and she said well where is he? It was good to catch up with her. I told her next time we were in the hospital we'd bring Cameron up to the NICU to visit with everyone. I have a feeling this month is going to be full of trips down memory lane.
We then moved to the 2nd floor waiting room, I'll be honest I was getting nervous when 12:30 rolled around and still no word. But soon after the nurse came in and took us to recovery. She said that our little guy decided he wasn't ready to sleep once they got him in the room. Apparently he wanted to play some more, so they had to give him another dose of the drug, and even then it took a while for him to go down, to the point that they almost aborted the mission. But the good news is they got it all done!
Cameron was peacefully sleeping when we saw him in recovery and woke up around 2pm and he wanted anything in his mouth, as he had not eaten since 2:30am. The nurse from neurology came by and fixed his shunt to bring it back to the correct setting (the magnet from the MRI moved it a bit). They gave us our discharge instructions, basically explained that the after effects of the sedation are the equivalent of a hangover - Matt asked if he should get him a chorizo burrito!
So we made it home around 3pm and Cameron dozed off to sleep, he woke briefly for some food and a little play time - he looks like a drunken sailor :) as you can see!
We will meet with Dr. Alden next Wednesday to review the results, it's going to be a long wait but we'll make it.
That's all folks - thanks for reading !!
